Rocky Robinson Takes Office As New President of Houston Bar Association
May 24, 2004HOUSTON -- Rocky Robinson, a partner in the law firm of Andrews Kurth LLP, took office May 20th as the new president of the Houston Bar Association (HBA). The HBA, with more than 11,500 members, is the fifth largest metropolitan bar association in the nation. Robinson succeeded Michael Connelly of Connelly•Baker•Wotring•Jackson L.L.P. at the HBA's Annual Dinner Meeting at the Houston Country Club.
Also installed as new HBA officers were Randall O. Sorrels of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Matthews & Friend, president-elect; Gregory C. Ulmer of Baker & Hostetler LLP, first vice president; Barrett H. Reasoner of Gibbs & Bruns, L.L.P., second vice president; Travis J. Sales of Baker Botts L.L.P., secretary; and Glenn A. Ballard, Jr. of Bracewell & Patterson, L.L.P., treasurer. Michael Connelly will serve on the board as immediate past president.
New directors for 2004-2006 are David Chaumette of Shook, Hardy & Bacon, L.L.P.; Lynette K. Fons of Beirne, Maynard & Parsons LLP; Steven M. Zager of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, L.L.P.; and Tommy Proctor of W. Thomas Proctor, P.C. Completing terms as directors for 2003-2005 are Thomas J. Brandt of Shell Oil Company; Denise Scofield of Vinson & Elkins L.L.P.; William E. (Ed) Junell, Jr. of Schwartz, Junell, Campbell & Oathout, L.L.P.; and David O. Fraga, attorney at law.
Robinson, 51, has served on the HBA board of directors since 1999, holding the offices of president-elect, treasurer and two terms as a director. He chaired the Houston Lawyer Referral Service, Inc., the HBA Judicial Polls Committee and the HBA Professionalism Committee. Robinson also served on the HBA Fee Dispute Committee and the Committee on Minority Opportunities in the Legal Profession. He is a Life Fellow of the Houston Bar Foundation and a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.
Robinson served as an officer and as a member of the board of directors of The Gladney Fund, Inc., and he is an emeritus member of The Children's Fund, Inc.
Robinson is board certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Civil Trial Law and is a member of the Fifth Circuit Bar Association. He earned his M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University and his J.D. degree from Dedman School of Law at SMU in 1978.
